About David

I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess.  –Martin Luther–

David: Husband, father, child of God.

I grew up in Northville, Michigan; a small town about twenty five miles west of Detroit.  Much of our life was centered on our church; St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod.  I went to school there, my friends were there, and that is also where the seed was planted that I should one day attend seminary and become a pastor.  Who knew that it would take so long for this seed to take root, but things happen on God’s time, not ours.

I served in the U.S. Navy as an electronics technician from 1978 to 1984 aboard two destroyers; USS Davis and USS Peterson.  I also spent one year on shore duty at a Naval bombing range near Ocala, Florida.  After my discharge from service, I took another job with Uncle Sam working at the Charleston Naval Shipyard.  I was there from 1984 until the base closed in April of 1996.

Following the closure of the naval shipyard, and experiencing the rigors of downward mobility, I realized that the place where I felt most at home, and most content was the church.  Soon, the seed planted by my teacher years before began to grow, and before long I was on my way to seminary.

By the grace of God, I have recently graduated from Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC and I’m awaiting my first call to be pastor.  In the meantime, I continue to jot down my thoughts, ideas, experiences and plenty of other useless information to share via this blog.  Perhaps a post or two will strike a chord and you will leave a comment; or at the very least you may stop and say hello.

  • OK - now I see the other pages. I may have to look into this, but not until we are done moving. I have at least 3 weeks of work to do, and less than 2 weeks left here.

  • David-

I have enjoyed reading your blog over the year and hope you will continue it. You write with grace, compassion and humor. I am a newly ordained WTS grad serving in my first call. Blessings to you on the call process.

    Peace,
    Lisa

  • hey david, I’d email you but don’t have your address. I’m wondering if you have any tips re: wordpress. I started a “blog” for Scout in WordPress, and I love how you have personalized yours, but am not good at knowing how to do this with wordpress. I know it’s much more flexible, but it’s not as clear to me.

I know you’re busy, so if you have something you can point me to, let me know!

  • David,

I’m so happy to know you. When I read your favorites, I began to see why.
First: I LOVE your Luther quote.
Second: I have eaten pasties–they’re wonderful!
Third: I like many of your music choices, especially Janis Joplin, Indigo Girls, Billy Joel, Elton John, and Bette Midler. Yay!

I don’t have a blog or a web site, but I’m working on it!

  • So, David, how is the call process going? Have you met yet with the candidacy committee for the final hurdle?

I am starting at LTSG in the fall. My husband is doing early retirement and we will be packing up and moving to PA.

God bless you as you near the end at Southern. Peace.
